This Site

A screenshot of version 1.0 of this site.

This site aims to be a nostalgic echo of those websites us folks of a certain age had growing up. (Geocities, Angelfire, Tripod, etc.) In lieu of blink and marquee tags, I thought I would add a gentle touch of modernity. My sincere hope is that the vast majority of those features are so subtle no one will consciously notice. This site will have a host of nudges inviting users to return and check for new content periodically. Something to rekindle that curiosity of yore we seem to have traded in for endless scroll views.

Why Static?

A few reasons:

  • I wanted the site to be dead simple.
  • I wanted this site to be hosted anywhere.
  • I don't have time to administer a server.

Web design (JavaScript in particular) is not my forté. Whenever I attempt to write anything more complex than a UI automation or snippet, I invariably introduce a host of bugs that are too tedious to debug. JavaScript is way too permissive for my sloppy paws. The last thing I want is to rely on JavaScript for both the client -and- server.

I also want my site capable of being hosted anywhere. Neocities? Sure. My own cheap HTTP server that JUST serves files? Perfect. The times, they are a-changing and with the passing of U.K.'s OSA (and soon the U.S.'s KOSA), who knows what options will be available for a wary furry looking to post butts online for consenting adults? I need a site I can quickly pack up and move to less draconian servers if need be.

Why Neocities?

More to come...
