This site has been several months in the making. Ever since RefSheet.net announced they'd be winding their site down, I decided to build a personal site in earnest. Nothing too fancy; at the very least, somewhere to hang my references online so I wouldn't have to juggle disparate links across Dropbox, Google Drive, and whatever free cloud solution struck my fancy whenever I needed to share an image at full fidelity.

Then I realized how much I missed long-form content. "I could host my own blog!" But the last thing I wanted to do was maintain a heavyweight, outdated CMS just for some silly words and pictures I'd most likely be linking from short-form social media. I just needed a place to house a few paragraphs. And some images. Nobody needs a comment section or the banality of Likes.

And then came the U.K.'s Online Safety Act and Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act, both of which spooked hosting providers into purging mature content. As of this writing, the U.S. is advancing its own KOSA/KIDS Act, threatening to further destabilize an already fragile ecosystem. This is my attempt at future-proofing the whole operation: because the site is statically generated, it can be hosted on almost any service. If things go south, I can always cast a few spells and pack things up for a new host. (At least while there are hosts to be found.)

It's like my therapist tells me: you can't control the actions of others in this big world; but you can control your own. Also, I can code.
